Learning Labs

Available for:  Grades 3-12

What is a “Learning Lab”?

The “Learning Lab” is a two-hour excursion to our Recycling Center at the Newton County Landfill. During the Learning Lab, students complete learning activities at eight different stations (with approximately 12 minutes spent at each station).  Activities are newly tailored to meet curriculum requirements for each year.  The students work in teams and move in sequence from station to station.

NOTE:   We understand that, at many schools, field trips have been limited or eliminated due to budgetary constraints.  We would like to work with you to bring some of the components of the learning lab to your school.  We can tailor similar programs to accommodate the class sizes and time limits you require.

What happens at the stations?

The first station has to do with litter and identifying what types of materials can be recycled. The second station is a computer trivia game about recycling and other environmental issues. The third station teaches students about composting and the food web.  Station Four is about hazardous materials and how to properly dispose of them. At Station Five, students make recycled paper. Station Six is about the water cycle and how to prevent stormwater pollution. At Station Seven, students learn about landfills and make edible landfills, with different candies representing layers of materials.  Station Eight allows students to see how bottles and cans are recycled at our center.

How does the Learning Lab work?

Staff and volunteers explain, at the beginning, how the labs work and instruct students as needed.  They explain that many materials in the center are recycled, including the carpet and paint.  Students enjoy a relaxed, yet structured, atmosphere as they work in teams of about 7 or 8 people.  Music from Seymore Green's puppet shows signals the teams to move to the next station in the sequence.

How can I schedule a Learning Lab?

To schedule a learning lab for your class or group, please call Laurie Riley at 678-625-5093 or send e-mail to lriley@co.newton.ga.us.
